Shine Your Light Yoga represents one of Golden Buddha Yoga’s most meaningful community service initiatives, created in partnership with the Take Back The Night Foundation’s Shine Your Light Yoga to support survivors through the healing power of yoga and mindful movement. This special gathering, held annually in December, brings together our yoga community in a powerful demonstration of solidarity, healing, and hope for all those affected by sexual violence.

What Shine Your Light Yoga Is

The concept of Shine Your Light Yoga emerged from our deep understanding of yoga’s therapeutic potential for trauma recovery and our commitment to using our platform to support important social causes. Sexual violence affects millions of people worldwide, and survivors often struggle with feelings of disconnection from their bodies, loss of personal power, and difficulty trusting others. Yoga, with its emphasis on body awareness, personal empowerment, and community support, offers unique tools for healing and reclaiming one’s sense of safety and strength.

Trauma-Informed Approach

Our Shine Your Light Yoga events are carefully designed to create a safe, supportive environment where survivors and their allies can experience the healing benefits of yoga practice while contributing to broader awareness and prevention efforts. The classes incorporate trauma-informed teaching principles, ensuring that all participants feel empowered to make choices about their own bodies and practice without pressure or judgment.

Each Shine Your Light Yoga session begins with a moment of acknowledgment for all survivors, creating a supportive space where experiences are honored and courage is celebrated. The practice itself focuses on gentle, accessible movements that help participants reconnect with their bodies in positive ways, emphasizing choice, consent, and personal agency throughout every aspect of the experience.

How the Practice Supports Healing

The yoga sequences used in Shine Your Light events are specifically chosen to promote feelings of strength, grounding, and empowerment. We incorporate poses that help participants feel stable and supported, breathing techniques that calm the nervous system, and meditation practices that cultivate self-compassion and inner resilience. Every element of the practice is designed to reinforce messages of personal worth, bodily autonomy, and the inherent strength that exists within each individual.

In plain words: expect slower, choice-based movement, lots of breathwork, and invitations—not directives—so everyone can participate at their own pace.

Community Impact & Donations

Our instructors who lead Shine Your Light Yoga events receive specialized training in trauma-informed yoga instruction, learning how to create environments that feel safe for survivors while avoiding potentially triggering language or physical adjustments. This training ensures that the healing potential of yoga can be accessed by all participants, regardless of their personal history or current relationship with their bodies.

The community aspect of Shine Your Light Yoga is equally important as the physical practice itself. These events bring together people from all walks of life who share a commitment to ending sexual violence and supporting survivors in their healing journeys. The shared experience of practicing yoga together creates bonds of understanding and solidarity that extend far beyond the yoga mat, building networks of support that strengthen our entire community.

Proceeds from Shine Your Light Yoga events are donated to local organizations that provide direct services to survivors of sexual violence, including counseling services, legal advocacy, emergency shelter, and prevention education programs. This financial support helps ensure that survivors have access to the resources they need for healing and recovery, while also funding important prevention efforts that work to create safer communities for everyone.

Why We Gather in December

The timing of our Shine Your Light Yoga events in December is intentional, as the holiday season can be particularly challenging for survivors who may be forced to interact with family members or attend social gatherings that feel unsafe. By offering a supportive community gathering during this time, we provide an alternative space where survivors can find comfort, connection, and healing during what might otherwise be a difficult period.

Education & Resources

Educational components are woven throughout our Shine Your Light Yoga initiative, helping participants understand the prevalence of sexual violence, recognize signs of trauma, and learn how to be supportive allies. We provide access to trusted resources, including the RAINN National Sexual Assault Hotline for confidential support and Take Back The Night programs for community-driven healing. These tools, alongside information about trauma-informed approaches, empower participants to create safer spaces in their communities.

Our Partnership with Take Back The Night

The impact of Shine Your Light Yoga extends far beyond the immediate participants, as attendees often share their experiences with friends and family members, spreading awareness about both the healing potential of yoga and the importance of supporting survivors of sexual violence. Our collaboration with the Take Back The Night Foundation connects our local efforts with a national movement to end sexual violence and is grounded in best practices for survivor support and broader advocacy.

Context note: Our studio is proud to be recognized by the Take Back The Night Foundation as a participating studio in their Shine Your Light Yoga initiative, supporting our shared mission to empower survivors through yoga.

Inclusion & Accessibility

The inclusive nature of Shine Your Light Yoga events means that people of all genders, ages, and yoga experience levels are welcome to participate. We recognize that sexual violence affects people across all demographics and that healing communities must be equally inclusive. Our events are designed to accommodate various physical abilities and comfort levels, ensuring that everyone can participate in ways that feel safe and meaningful to them.

Creating a Supportive Environment

Special attention is paid to creating physical environments that feel safe and welcoming for all participants. This includes considerations like lighting levels, room temperature, music selection, and seating arrangements that allow people to position themselves where they feel most comfortable. We also provide clear information about what to expect during the event, allowing participants to make informed decisions about their participation.

Future Vision

The long-term vision for Shine Your Light Yoga includes expanding these events to reach more communities and training additional instructors in trauma-informed yoga approaches. We believe that yoga studios and wellness centers have a unique opportunity and responsibility to support survivors of sexual violence, and we hope that our model can inspire similar initiatives in other locations.

Participant Reflections

Feedback from Shine Your Light Yoga participants consistently highlights the powerful combination of physical healing, emotional support, and community connection that these events provide. Many attendees describe feeling more empowered in their bodies, more connected to supportive community members, and more hopeful about their healing journeys after participating in these special yoga experiences.

Carrying the Light Beyond the Mat

The ripple effects of Shine Your Light Yoga events continue long after each gathering ends, as participants carry the messages of empowerment, healing, and community support into their daily lives. Many become advocates for trauma-informed approaches in their own workplaces, schools, and communities, multiplying the positive impact of these events far beyond our yoga studio walls.
